Spiritual Awakenings is essentially journaling via art – true, but really it’s about uncovering our stories and experiencing God’s healing presence as we create side by side in community.Our next Spiritual Awakenings Retreat is Thursday April 25: 6:30-9p/Friday and Saturday 10a – 4p. THE BUNKER: Closet Makeover @ the Fort

Our Fort Mckinley campus is growing – with three explosive worship celebration every Sunday morning. The worship team needed some space to relax and refresh but what 1960s church building sports a green room close to the worship stage? Enter one of my favorite mantras:

EVERYTHING YOU NEED YOU ALREADY HAVE.

And yes, we did have just the right space – a large, neglected storage closet just off the stage. Some planning, painting, decoupaging and a trip to IKEA – and wha-la. We’ve got a green room, fondly named THE BUNKER. What do you think? Do you have a closet that needs to “come out” with a new and improved purpose?

first up, this old altar was too big and bulky for the crazy-crowded stage. why not repurpose it as a counter?

next we decoupaged classy paper napkins onto the top and once dry, covered with a piece of Plexiglass. we added a long springrod in front and a few yards of landscape burlap for an organic-looking curtain. extra shelving added inside the "counter" for refreshment supplies.

final look: IKEA couch and tables on the left, outdoor weave rugs on the floor, decoupaged altar-turned-coffee counter on the right, shelves for a few decor essentials and accessories. a limited color schemes helps the room take on a more "relaxed professional" feeling. the warm gold tones on the walls match the worship area - and the stained glass looks pretty snazzy with the black/brown furnishings.

Our Ginghamsburg Makeover Team set out to design a stage to provide an engaging backdrop for our seven-week series on the Holy Spirit. Inspired by a Columbus, Ohio Anthropologie storefront, our key resources were smashed aluminum cans (clean!) and paper pendant lights from IKEA. With weedcloth as a wall covering/backdrop – and following a sketch Kim provided – the team hammered hundreds of cans to the wall using small nails/brads. A sleeve of 1000 can lids (secured from our local Pepsi dealer) rounded out the design. Finally, ketchup bottles filled with paint allowed the team to “throw” painted accents over the lids, enhancing the feeling of movement.

We lit the stage walls with our standard, floor-mounted LEDs. The IKEA lights were hung from a suspended PVC grid and arranged in such a way as to mimic doves in flight across the stage. Total cost for materials and lights came in at $150. Special note: our church family LOVED this design.

We started by putting hammering U-shaped nails 6" apart onto 8 - 8' 2x4s

For each set of stretched rope, boards were secured high and low. Each strand of rope was threaded separately..

...and interwoven between the strands of the opposite set. 8' boards were painted black.

The ropes were enhanced by gelled lighting cans. LED-lit backstage walls were already covered in weedcloth...

makeover @ the mckinney’s

My cell group's booth at Ginghamsburg's 2012 Children's Sudan Bazaar. We raffled off a one-room EXTREME MAKEOVER and netted $500 for the Christmas Miracle Offering.

Girls-only cell group. We had a great time working the booth.

THE MAKEOVER BEGINS: A week ago Caryn and Robin applied a glaze to these salmon-colored entry walls. What a great different that made!

Our greatest challenge? Two story walls that definitely needed paint. We chose "ecru" to balance the other bright colors in the room.

So glad Robin and Chris know what they're doing...applying tile around the fireplace.

Not done yet but oh what an amazement this will be.

Common Grounds @ The Point -Part 2

our second workday at The Point was amazing and exhausting. 59 servants, 11 cans of paint, 8.5 hours, one newspaper and two TV stations later we had a vibrantly painted cafe. i met a lot of great people and was surprised all over again at how much can be accomplished with a single focus and a powerful vision. check out the news story that played that night..

welcome desk area - using a dark reddish brown, this area took on a much richer look

kitchen prep area - remember the lavendar walls? green counters trimmed in the darker brown and a gold wall are now the backdrop for the cafe

cement walls - we created a "chair rail" look with two colors. next week we'll add more design on the upper portion of this far wall.

front window walls - soffet repaired and trim painted - starting to look cared for.

staging area...for future small bands

found counter – my favorite part of the day…finding an old laminated counter in the storage dump next door and replacing the wiggly entrance wall with this beauty. we had to sand the old black marble-y laminate and paint it the dark reddish brown. beautiful- and free!

Common Grounds @ The Point

Saturday we will take on the "cafe" area of The Point, our newly acquired Ginghamsburg campus located in a small strip mall in Trotwood, Ohio. We plan to transform this community space into another "Common Grounds Coffee Shop" - replicating the locations we already have in our "Avenue" at the Tipp City campus and another at our church plant in the Czech Republic.

40 Men & A Movie

one of the best parts of my role as campus designer is to get to partner nearly all our ministry teams at one time or another. this past weekend i was blown away by the camaraderie and creativity of two teams on two huge projects. Family Flick Night with our Ginghamsburg Kids’ adult leaders and painting the Avenue gym with our Ginghamsburg Men’s Ministry. call me happy and a little bit tired:)

Fast forward 8 hours and we are almost ready for kids. Stage is set - lighting is being adjusted and a few folks are already bringing in their blankets to save their family spot.

Not too shabby. Made me wish i was a kid all over again... popcorn, a live worship band, a movie and EVERYBODY in their pjs. How fun is that? 500 movie-goers, despite the weather! Kudos to Kelly Flora and her incredible team....

Avenue gym -- before. Cement walls are 10-yr-old turquoise and peach. Thankfully in the span of 5 hours this will change.

The guys were absolutely incredible. Men from their 20s to their 60s dove in and got it done like they'd been working together all their lives. Tony Miltenberger and I "coached" the team to an early victory. Professional painter Steve Wilkey made the work seamless.

We are excited. The guys love the colors and I do too.

It Feels Like Home

civil rights footage / "it feels like home"

i’ve been part of ginghamsburg for nearly 20 years- and served on the worship design team for most of that time. i can recall many great experiences and have felt God show up in our midst over and over again – but some days are just different, ya know? some days remind me why i signed up for this gig. some days i’m just darn proud to call ginghamsburg my home. some days it just feels like home.

martin luther king weekend worship has taken on different nuances over the last two decades. it’s been an opportunity to lift up one of our deepest community values – that if we aren’t demonstrating and celebrating the FULL kingdom of God it’s not really God. this past weekend we invited long-time ginghamsburg friend Dr. Frank Thomas from Mississippi Blvd. Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee to bring a word as part of our current “modernfamily” message series. Dr. Thomas did not disappoint. you’ll find a link to his message here (column on the right) by tomorrow/tuesday at noon.

so many take-aways from this message, but the song JK chose for our offering really summed up my experience and the prayer of my heart:

pressing into the future: worship design retreats

how does your team press into the future? we’ve all heard it said that if we do things the way we’ve always done we’ll get what we’ve always got. our team’s new day is dawning in the context of mini-retreats, days apart (at a coffee shop, a business center, a comfy living room, etc.) planned for the specific purpose of mapping out series, key events and holidays. we treat these sessions as if each series, each worship event, each gathering of our church family is a life-or-death matter, because… it is. our Fort McKinley team always meets with us. we’re forced to collaborate and get the very best input from both angles – the mega church and the growing community-driven church plant. fail to plan and we plan to fail.
